The Law Student’s Lament

By Jacob M. Appel

I’d like to claim long held juristic ends;
In truth I just required future steps.
To propagate the bourgeoisie depends
On chain conveyers full of clinging saps

And I was one of these:  Unfit for toil
Requiring any skill or expertise,
Yet other dolts’ ideas I could despoil
Or fell an absent scholar at the knees.

So to the books and off my parents’ dole!
Though penal codes proved themselves a prison
While torts did damage to my very soul
And contracts left me bound with indecision.

Then came exams—but I failed to fool the proctor;
How I wished I’d earned the grades to be a doctor.
